Tacolneston Parish Council's Response to the National Grid Consultation

"At the meeting of Tacolneston Parish Council on the 11th May negative impact on the village of the 50m high pylons proposed as part of the National Grid consultation was discussed. The council recognises that it has little power to intervene. However, the council has resolved to respond to the National Grid consultation to register our strong objection to their proposal and ask that they consider running the required cables direct from the North Norfolk coast undersea to Tilbury.

As a Parish we object most vehemently to allowing any pylons to be erected within sight of any part of the Tacolneston Conservation Area. This conservation area is unlike any other in South Norfolk and preserves the landscape as well as the buildings within it. The National Grid should take this into consideration. If they are determined to push ahead with an overland route the power lines should be placed underground through the parishes of Tacolneston and Forncett to preserve our protected landscape.

The concept of running overhead power lines is outdated and poor practice from an environmental and environmental health perspective.  As a country we should be pioneering lower impact solutions. If we can run connectors from this country to the continent, to Norway, and even to the Shetland Isles, it is surely possible for the National Grid to develop an undersea pipeline to house these cables.  A suggestion promoted by many of our regional MPs and politicians.

We are concerned that the only benefit of this scheme is the low cost. We are not prepared for our landscape to be despoiled for the benefit of those living outside our area. As a Parish Council we have agreed to work closely with our elected representatives, pressure groups and neighbouring councils to do what we can to highlight the negative impact of this scheme."
